General Information about DarrowGeneral Information about Darrow

Life at DarrowHealth and Safety are emphasized on all Darrow trips. We focus on thorough training and on prevention. All campers receive several days of instruction in canoeing, water safety, and campcraft and are expected to pass a swimming test and skill checks before departing on their trips. Each section carries a well stocked first aid kit and staff members are trained in its use.

Medical problems beyond the common cold and scratch are taken to the nearest hospital for treatment. All trips carry lists of communications access points to contact help in case of emergency. Trips into remote regions of the far north carry emergency position indicating radio beacons (EPIRBs) and/or satellite phones to facilitate evacuation or medical consultation if necessary. A physician licensed in the State of Maine annually reviews our wilderness medical protocols. Darrow has an excellent safety record.

Darrow Camp is smoke free, both at our Base Camp and on our trips.

Camp Equipment is of the best quality and is kept in good order by the campers and staff. Each person is fitted with a proper paddle and is responsible for it for the duration of their stay. Third year campers are given their own paddle. Canoes are wood-canvas and are maintained by the crews using them.

Personal Equipment -- Campers need to bring only their own personal equipment and clothing. All other necessary canoeing and camping equipment is provided by the Camp. A detailed clothing and equipment list is available on our What to Bring to Camp page.

Camp Food is plentiful, attractive, and wholesome. We take great pride in the art of campfire cooking and have developed recipes that satisfy healthy appetites and nutritional requirements in the distinctive conditions of wilderness travel. All our meals are prepared from scratch to ensure quality. Most meals are served hot, and fresh baked goods cooked in a reflector oven are served every day. Many campers and staff have become excellent cooks at Darrow.

Fishing is an important part of the Darrow experience for those who wish. Smallmouth Bass, Yellow Perch, and Chain Pickerel are regularly caught on our Maine trips. Landlocked Salmon and Lake Trout (Togue)are also common early in the season. Lake Trout, Walleye, Northern Pike, and trophy Brook Trout are found in large numbers in Canada. We will gladly teach the novice to fish.
