Just as the canoe was developed by Native American people for travel through the waterways of northern North America in summer, the snowshoe and toboggan were developed for travel on the frozen waterways in winter. A winter trip by snowshoe and toboggan offers the opportunity to experience this traditional mode of travel while exploring the stunning beauty, power, and solitude of the northern wilderness.
Far from being an activity for those insensitive to cold, traditional winter camping is an orderly process which allows us to explore the winter wilderness in safety and in comfort. We camp in large canvas tents heated by woodstoves, allowing us to cook, dine, relax, bathe, and sleep in the comfort of the heated tent.
Darrow winter trips require no previous experience – we will gladly teach you the specialized skills of winter living in the bush. For those who have participated in a summer wilderness trip, winter travel provides a rich complementary experience that leads to a fuller understanding of the cycles of the seasons and of the complex inter relationships of the natural world.
Darrow provides all specialty winter equipment, including snowshoes, snowshoe moccasins, and winter camping equipment. A detailed clothing and equipment list is available to help you assemble your winter “kit” from commonly available items.
