Darrow Staff

Trip Leaders are carefully selected on the basis of their skills and their experience in working with young people. The minimum age is 21 and leaders must have been Assistant Trip Leaders at Darrow for at least one year or have comparable wilderness canoe trip leadership experience. Trip Leaders are licensed by the State of Maine.

Assistant Trip Leaders must either be 19 or be a college freshman at 18.

Junior Staff are 17 and 18 year olds who have demonstrated leadership ability and who serve under the older staff members.

Base Camp Support Staff include Food Service, Outfitting, Transportation, and Maintenance personnel.

Many of the staff are former campers who have received leadership training at Darrow. All tripping staff are required to hold current Wilderness First Responder or Wilderness First Aid, Life Saving, and CPR certification. All tripping staff participate in ten days of intensive training before camp each year and are required to pass both written and practical exams. Darrow's staff training has been approved as a Trip Leader Certification course by the State of Maine.
